Feedback needed: pictures in signatures

Postby evan » Wed Nov 09, 2005 10:22 am

Hey y'all

We are developing policy at the moment and we need some feeback on this issue.
The feeling is that pictures within signatures are an unnecessary drain an bandwith, especially for those on a dialup modem. There is no way for us to limit their size or content.
We feel that enough can be said about one's personality through a textual signature and a visual avatar.
Can we get a ho! or a no! please?

Obviously there needs to be moderation of large (screen-wise & kilobytes-wise) images in signatures, but I don't think it's fair to remove them all together
If people are using dial-up modems @ home, any pics in signatures (or avatars for that matter), should (may) be getting cached anyway, meaning the overhead is only paid once. Unless these pages are coded to prevent caching or the loading of cached images?
Either way, it's pretty meh. But being opinionated and vocal about the most mundane (and also the pertinent) of issues is just so much more fun/entertaining than being a "lurker" :P  :D

I don't know about the caching - since it's linked through a dynamic page and not embedded in a static one, I doubt there is caching.
Size moderation unfortunately isn't an option. Bummer.

I did very much like the AFI cartoon, but would agree that if there is no way to control its size or content its probably best to remove the option. There's still nothing stopping us from starting a thread (although I think one already exists) to post images we'd like to share.

I've been in other forums where people have ridiculously big GIFs in their signature, and for those of us poor enough to still be on dial up it can be pretty annoying.

I don't wanna be a little bitch but I don't think "Feeback" is a word. Sorry just thought you'd want to get some "Feedback", seeing that you the admin guy and all :D

That may not be so bad. After all, I'm not actually an IP address, and my ISP isn't .co.nz! Nor am I running on my Mac. That would damage it.

Oh No. Hugh's thing is awesome. If it goes I'm sure a little fairy somewhere will drop dead.

*I do believe in fairys*

Anyway, I think that images are ok so long as they are kept to a certain image and file size. For example, mines prettty small.

Also, its not as if many people use them anyway, true if we were to get a large influx of people posting here turning them off may be a good option but at the minute I dont see any need for it ?

I vote yes. If people put stupidly large or slow-loading pics in, the community can just haze the bejesus out of them till they change them.
And it'd be a shame to see the penguin go!
